Attentional disorders such as Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD) or Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are common not only in children but also in people with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, menopausal women and other adults.

In this issue of The Burnham Review we explore suboccipital strain patterns and other head and neck dysfunctions, which can contribute to ADD / ADHA as well as torticollis, frequent vomiting, problems swallowing, scoliosis, plagiocephaly, facial asymmetry, and colic with excessive crying in babies.

Structural problems of the head and neck can also lead to development of fine and gross motor skills, poor posture and equilibrium, delayed language development, restlessness, and insecurity in older children and adults.

A number of articles and books indicate that manual therapy, massage therapy and other complementary medicine approaches can improve head and neck function leading to a decrease or elimination of the above symptoms.

In other studies, therapeutic touch showed promise as an effective intervention with problematic vocalization and pacing and agitation in people with Alzheimer’s.

This issue also looks at an article where medical doctors are recommending Integrative Manual Therapy for the inattention symptoms in some menopausal women. Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN NP notes, "The Centers for Disease Control estimated in 2005 that somewhere between 2% and 18% of children in the US are affected by ADHD in one form or another, and as many as two-thirds or more of these children will continue to have symptoms well into their adult years. Of note for women of menopausal age is that over time, two of the three core symptoms of ADHD (hyperactivity and impulsivity) tend to fade, but inattention is likely to have persisted." Pick, M. (2007). "Is it attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?" Women to Women [Full Text] http://www.womentowomen.com/fatigueandstress/adhd.aspx

The benefit of massage therapy in improving children and adolescent attentiveness is well documented by Tiffany Field, PhD at the Touch Research Institute............Buy This Issue Today
