7-16 Manual Therapy and the Lymphatic System: Lymphedema
Manual Therapy is beneficial in lymphatic system related disorders. Therapies shown to be effective include, Osteopathic Manual Therapy, Massage Therapy, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Integrative Manual Therapy, Reiki, Chiropractic care, Applied Kinesiology and self massage or manual therapy. There is evidence that manual therapies improves lymphatic system signs and symptoms. This includes the following conditions: General Lymphedema, Breast Lymphedema, Trigeminal Neuralgia, Bell’s Palsy, Digestive System Pain and Dysfunction, Bone Bruising and Fractures, Headaches, Thyroid dysfunction, Foot edema, and more.
One study on rats evaluated the effects of tissue massage on a part of the body remote from the region of lymph uptake into the initial lymphatics. “The study demonstrated that mechanical pressure to body regions physically distant from the location of lymph formation enhances lymph uptake.”(Dery, 2000)............Buy This Issue Today
