In 1979 Metz wrote an article entitled, "Cooperation between physicians and physical therapists in the complex management of shoulder-arm pains including manual therapy" in Beitr Orthop Traumatol. Since then many journal articles have focused on the use of hands-on techniques, including massage therapy, manual therapies acupuncture and other Complementary Medicine approaches to decrease pain and increase shoulder function in injury related dysfunction as well as disease processes affecting the shoulder.
